PROJECT UPDATES

Y.E.S. UPDATE

Tribal Schools:
By the generosity of donors, the YES schools are flourishing well. We are currently sponsoring 51 tribal schools in the Himalayan region and 21 tribal schools in Bihar.  Additionally, we have sponsored the restoration and re-establishment of 8 schools and a medical clinic in Orissa which had been destroyed in the cyclone.

Sanskar Vidya Mandir:
On the premises of Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh, India, Sanskar Vidya Mandir has added 7th and 8th class.  This Junior School takes place in the mornings, along with the childrens school, and we have shifted the nursery and kindergarten to the afternoons. There are now over 225 children whose lives are being enriched through the academic education as well as through the teachings of values, ethics and sanskaras.

Other YES News:
The YES project currently sponsors a total of 117 educational programs, including children's schools, junior/high schools, women's vocational training programs, adult education programs, music/dance programs and one orphanage/gurukul. A new children's school and a new women's vocational training program will open soon in Ranichuri, Himalayas.

In Lucknow, through the great dedication and management of Shri Shiv Balak Mishraji and through the generosity of Smt. Bina and Shri Chris Stevenson of Australia, our new junior school/high school -- the only of its kind for more than a 20 km radius -- is now fully functional.

Previously, there had been only a children's school, and thus after graduation from primary school, the children had nowhere to go other than into the fields to work.  Now, they can continue their education and -- by the grace of God -- transcend the lives of poverty into which they were born.  Additionally, the renovations and additions, have enabled the children's school to also expand. Now, instead of 400 children, there are 600 children coming each day.

In Memory of Dear Sheena
Parmarth Vidya Mandir:

In June, 2000, a divine child was taken from the worldly realm back to the realm of God. In memory of her divine soul, and to bring life to other children who don't have the opportunities that dear Sheena had, her parents have committed themselves to Parmarth Vidya Mandir  -- a project of YES -- in Rishikesh. The school which was later to become Sheena's was inaugurated in June, 2000 and officially opened in November 2000 by Pujya Swamiji, Smt. Sarita and Shri Yatinder Singhal and several other distinguished guests. There are now over 2000 young girls and boys who are receiving the irreplaceable gifts of an education, vocational training, skills training and most importantly the gifts of hope and faith.

On September 22, 2002, her parents had a special fundraiser in Detroit, with the help of Divine Soul Smt. Madhvi Doshi and several of their dear, committed friends. A film called Tapish produced by Shri Yatinderji was shown and speeches were given about the importance of the project.

The fundraiser was greatly successful and large donations were received for this divine project.

It has been beautiful to see the way that Smt. Saritaji, Shri Yatinderji and their friends have come together, taken a tragic loss and turned it into such a great gift of life to so many underprivileged children living in the sacred Himalayas.

MANSAROVAR UPDATE:

In June, 1998 when Pujya Swami Gurusharananandji Maharaj, Pujya Sant Shri Rameshbhai Oza (Bhaiji) and Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji (Muniji) went on yatra to the sacred land of Mansarovar and Mt. Kailash, in Tibet, they saw the desperateness of the local situation. There are no medical facilities for hundreds of kilometers. People frequently suffer or even die from basic, treatable altitude sickness, due to lack of medical attention. There is no indoor place to stay - all must camp in tents.

Therefore, Pujya Muniji Maharaj vowed that -by the grace of God -- He would do something for the local people (who don't even have running water) and for all the pilgrims who travel there.
Two and a half years were spent in discussions with the Chinese government, and - with the cooperation and support of the Bureau of Foreign Affairs and Tourism of Ngari Prefecture of Tibet Autonomous Region - we finally obtained permission for the project.

In December, 2000 permission was officially granted by the Chinese Government to build
an ashram and a hospital in the sacred land.
Further, this will be the spring board for other much-needed humanitarian projects in the area,
including schools, vocational training programs, etc.

Now, the project is nearly complete, yet the winter freeze prevents any further pilgrimage to the area. So, once the passage opens, in June of 2002 we will travel there on yatra for a special inauguration.

This divine hospital and 16-room ashram will be inaugurated by His Holiness Shankaracharyaji Shri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal, Kanchi Kaam Koti Peeth, H.H. Shankaracharyaji Pujya Swami Divyanand Teerthji Maharaj, Bhanpura Peeth, Pujya Swami Gurusharananandji Maharaj and H.H. Pujya Sant Shri Rameshbhai Oza. Official dignitaries and VIPs who will also grace the occasion include Shri ML Mittal, Dr. BK Modi, and many others.
